Lectureship positions available in Cambridge, Newnham College

Newnham College is currently advertising for Associate and College Lecturers in biological subjects, and would be keen for postdocs (not just University Teaching Officers) to apply for these positions.

ASSOCIATE LECTURESHIPS IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

Newnham College invites applications from men and women for Associate Lectureships, each involving the equivalent of three hours’ teaching a week during Full Term time (20 weeks of the year), primarily to Part I students. Associate Lecturers are also expected to participate in the promotion of their subject amongst students of the College.

The person(s) appointed will have interests in teaching and research in any field of the biological sciences, but the immediate need is for teaching in 1A Physiology, 1A Evolution and Behaviour, 1B Biochemistry, 1B Animal Behaviour or 1B Cell and Developmental Biology for the Natural Sciences Tripos.  Experience in supervising one or more of these courses is desirable.

The College pays Associate Lecturers at 25 per cent above the usual supervision rates, offers seven meals a week without charge, use of IT equipment and use of a room for conducting teaching.  The post will be tenable only in conjunction with another salaried academic or research appointment in the University of Cambridge or local research institution.  It will be tenable from 1 October 2010, for one year in the first instance and may be renewed on an annual basis following a review.

Further particulars may be obtained from http://www.newn.cam.ac.uk/joining-newnham/academic-posts  or the Principal, Newnham College, Cambridge CB3 9DF, email principal@newn.cam.ac.uk, to whom applications (six copies) should be sent.

Prospective candidates are welcome to contact Dr Terri Apter (tea20@cam.ac.uk) or Dr Lisa Saksida (lms42@cam.ac.uk) for additional information or to arrange an informal discussion.

Applications should be submitted with a letter outlining research interests and relevant teaching experience, a c.v. and the names and addresses of three referees. The closing date for applications is Friday 21st May 2010. Candidates are asked to request that references be sent direct to the Principal by the closing date.

COLLEGE LECTURESHIP IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

Newnham College invites applications from women for a College Lectureship (which will carry a College Fellowship) in the Biological Sciences.  The core responsibility will be directing studies (for around 15 students) and the option of either four or six hours’ supervision (i.e. small group teaching) a week during Full Term time (20 weeks of the year). The post is intended for someone with a full time or substantial post (not necessarily a University Teaching Officer) in the University of Cambridge or local research institution.

Applications are encouraged from candidates who specialise in any field of biological science but candidates must be able to teach one or more courses in Part 1A and/or Part 1B of the undergraduate Cambridge Natural Sciences Tripos. There is a particularly strong need for a College Lecturer in Cell, Molecular or Developmental Biology.  Experience in supervising one or more courses of the Natural Sciences Tripos or willingness to learn and a demonstrable capacity for small group teaching is essential.

Payment is between £3000 and £5000 per annum, depending on the number of teaching hours and the number of students for which direction of studies is provided.  Payment for directing studies is additional to this stipend or may with the agreement of the Senior Tutor be set against the contractual hours of supervision.  College Lecturers are entitled to seven meals in college per week without charge, an office or study in College which may be shared; they have access to research funds, to child care support, and to the College’s standard IT package and the College’s shared equity scheme and may be eligible to rent residential accommodation at a reduced rate subject to availability.
