Title of talk:        The amazing capacity of the adult central nervous system to repair traumatic injuries

Martin Schwab, Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Zurich since 1985 and at the Eidgenőssische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Zurich since 1997, also directs the National Center of Competence in Research funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

Prof. Schwab identified an inhibitory effect on axon growth in the central nervous system and, with meticulous care and exemplary scientific methodology, has moved from the identification and neurobiological characterisation of NOGO-A to the development of anti-NOGO-A antibodies, now in late stage clinical trials, as a treatment for spinal cord and brain injury. 

This fine example of clinical sciences, now in collaboration with Novartis Basel and the European Clinical Network led from the University Clinic Balgrist in Zurich, provides compelling evidence for structural and functional repair of focal lesions.  The story of NOGO-A and its potential clinical applications is indeed amazing.
