Postdoctoral Research Associate position available in Professor Sadaf Farooqi's lab
Postdoctoral Research Associate in Molecular Neuroscience, Wellcome Trust-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science (Fixed Term)
Department/Location: Department of Clinical Biochemistry
Published: 1 May 2014
Closing date: 21 May 2014
Applications are invited for a position funded by the Wellcome Trust to join an internationally recognised team led by Professor Sadaf Farooqi, working to understand the molecular and neural basis of energy homeostasis (Asai et al. Science 2013; Pearce et al. Cell 2013). Using genetic strategies to study patients with severe obesity, we have identified novel obesity-associated mutations which disrupt the neural pathways involved in eating behaviour and energy homeostasis. Loss of function mutations in these proteins are likely to impact on axon guidance, synaptic plasticity and other neuronal mechanisms which we now propose to test in cellular systems. This position represents an ideal opportunity for a highly motivated neuroscientist with a track record of publications to take a leading role in developing this ambitious programme of research.
You will have a PhD or equivalent degree in neuroscience or a closely related discipline and be experienced in neuronal transfection, fixed and live cell confocal microscopy, immunocytochemistry, calcium imaging and ideally patch-clamping. You will have excellent communication and organisational skills as you will play a key role in developing new external collaborations.
Proposed start date: 1st July 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 36 months in the first instance.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
