Congratulations to Dr Rickie Patani on award of Wellcome Trust Intermediate Clinical Fellowship

Congratulations to Dr Rickie Patani who has recently been awarded a Wellcome Trust Intermediate Clinical Fellowship for Clinician Scientists. He will be starting his lab in October and is also being sponsored by University of Cambridge, UCL and University of Edinburgh. This is a 5-year fellowship during which he will finish his higher training in Clinical Neurology at Addenbrooke's hospital.

Dr Patani is a post-doctoral Clinical Research Associate at the Anne McLaren Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine and a Specialist Registrar in Neurology at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square. His research focuses on motor neurone disease (MND), a rapidly progressive and invariably fatal neurodegenerative condition. At present, the causes and underlying biology of this devastating disease are poorly understood. Dr Patani is an expert in the generation of human cell-based models of MND. It is hoped that these ‘disease models in a dish’ will yield fundamental insights into the biology of MND, and prove to be a valuable tool in the evaluation and discovery of new targeted therapies.

Earlier this year, Dr Patani was appointed the first Rowling Fellow. This designation is reserved for outstanding collaborators outside the University of Edinburgh whose research aims align closely with the goals of the Anne Rowling Clinic. Rowling fellowships are offered to promote collaborative research, innovation and partnership in the area of Regenerative Neurology.

Congratulations to Rickie on a very successful 2013 to date!
