Restricted call: BA Global Professorships 2020 (internal deadline 18 November 2019)

Restricted call: BA Global Professorships 2020 (internal deadline 18 November 2019)

The British Academy has opened a new programme for Global Professorships.

The purpose of the Global Professorships is to enable world-class scholars in the social sciences or humanities to further their individual research goals while strengthening the UK research base and advancing the research goals and strategies of their UK host universities. Up to 10 Global Professorships each year will be offered. Each award will provide funding for four years to an internationally-recognised researcher active in any field within the social sciences or the humanities, not currently working in the United Kingdom, to bring their research experience to the UK. Awards are for a period of four years and must be taken up between 1 August 2020 and 1 February 2021.

Please note the following:

·         Candidates must be currently employed outside the United Kingdom, on a permanent contract or, if temporary, would normally be a contract that will not end during the course of the grant.

·         Up to £187,500 is provided per annum for the first three years and up to £750,000 over four years. The UK host institution will be expected to contribute up to £37,500 per annum (or 20% of the Academy's annual contribution).

·         The scheme can be used as a 4-year secondment to a UK university, an unpaid leave of absence, or it can be part of a recruitment process.

·         The British Academy will not fund through this scheme applicants who are current PIs of the following funding programmes: Cities & Infrastructure; Early Childhood Development; Sustainable Development; Heritage, Dignity and Violence; Urban Infrastructures of Well-Being; and Early Childhood Education.

We have received informal advice from the British Academy that the following factors are very important in successful applications:

·         Fit with the institution: Pre-existing projects will not be funded, but pre-existing links with the host institution are accepted.  Equally, entirely new collaborations are accepted.  The collaborations should not be with only one Cambridge PI and applications should provide evidence to demonstrate that the applicant will fit well with the wider institutional landscape.

·         Quality of the research project: The project must be exciting to the review panel.  The focus is less on the person and more on the kind of project that they are going to run.

More information can be found in the scheme notes here.

University Internal Coordination:

The British Academy does not expect to make more than two Global Professorship appointments to any single institution within this round of competition (closing February 2020) and institutions are expected to provide matching funds. Thus, this call is subject to the University's restricted calls policy

Matching funds for up to two applicants are available from the Isaac Newton Trust and these applicants will be selected through the internal selection process.

To take part in the internal selection process please submit your application to by 18 November 2019.

Internal selection applications should include:

·         The attached internal selection form;

·         CV (2 pages) and list of publications;

·         A support letter from the Head of the Department / Centre / Institute that will hold the grant, confirming their support for the project and agreement to host the grant.
