Congratulations to Professors Maria Grazia Spillantini and Tony Holland

They were formally admitted to the Academy during a ceremony held on the 22nd June, 2010.

Election to the Fellowship is based on an outstanding contribution to the advancement of medical science, or for the application of existing scientific knowledge or understanding in an innovative way, so as to bring about advances in human health and welfare.

Maria Grazia Spilliantini (pictured right) is recognised for her research investigating the molecular mechanisms leading to neuronal death and clinical phenotype in diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and frontotemporal dementia. Tony Holland, pictured left, is acknowledged for his research whereby he implements an interdisciplinary approach to studying learning disabilities.

Tony and Maria joined the existing Fellows of the Academy (bringing the total membership to 983) in a ceremony on Tuesday, 22nd June, 2010 where they were formally admitted to the Academy.
