Congratulations to Mr Peter Hutchinson on his appointment as NIHR Research Professor in Neurosurgery

Congratulations to Mr Peter Hutchinson on his appointment as NIHR Research Professor in Neurosurgery. This is a prestigious personal fellowship awarded by the NIHR (National Institute of Health Research) to academics with an outstanding record of clinical and applied health research.

Peter’s particular area of interest is head injury and monitoring and optimising cerebral metabolism to improve outcome. Head injury is a major cause of morbidity and the commonest cause of death under the age of 40 years. Their research aims to increase the understanding of the pathophysiology of this heterogeneous condition using imaging and monitoring techniques (brain pressure, oxygenation and chemistry) and to apply novel medical and surgical treatment strategies to improve outcome. The studies also provide a platform for training the next generation of academic surgeons.
