Education and Neuroscience - £6 million funding available

We are delighted to announce the launch of Education and Neuroscience, a new joint funding initiative from the Wellcome Trust and the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). This one-off scheme aims to develop, evaluate and communicate the impact of education interventions grounded in neuroscience research. Deadline for applications: 6 May 2014.

Together we are investing £6 million in research by educators and neuroscientists to develop neuroscience-based educational interventions and evaluate their effectiveness. For more information on this funding scheme and how to get involved, please visit the EEF website. If you would like to be kept informed of this work, or if you have any queries, please email us at: info@eefoundation.org.uk.

There are few, if any, interventions which have been developed from insights from neuroscience and have been systematically proven to have academic impact in classroom settings. The Wellcome Trust and the EEF are now working to improve the understanding and application of neuroscience in education.

Our recent report How neuroscience is affecting education, based on findings of a teacher and parent survey, shows the sorts of ideas that claim to be based on neuroscience that are being applied in education, how they are selected and evaluated, and the appetite that there is for further interventions based on neuroscience. The survey found that many teachers were optimistic about the ability for neuroscience to improve teaching practice over the next decade, but wanted interventions to be evidence-based rather than simply yet another strategy imposed upon schools.

We have also asked neuroscientists to consider how ready their areas of research expertise were to yield testable and fruitful education interventions, and to identify what it would take to make such progress. These reviews will be posted on the Wellcome Trust’s ThInk blog in the coming weeks.

Further information on this work to improve the understanding and application of neuroscience in education can be found on our website.

Best regards from the Wellcome Trust Education Team
