Restricted Call: ESRC Future Research Leaders 2014/15

Restricted Call: ESRC Future Research Leaders 2014/15

The ESRC have launched their Future Research Leaders Call, the deadline for which has been postponed and is now 20 January 2015 (16:00).

Potential applicants are encouraged to read the new guidance and should particularly note that:

  • Due to the changed submission deadline, the eligibility requirements for the call have also changed so that applicants may have up to four years and four months’ academic research experience following the submission date of their PhD on 20 January 2015.
  • Although proposals for the call continue to be welcome in any topic which falls within the ESRC’s remit, proposals are particularly encouraged in the following areas:
    • Big data (i.e. social media data, business data and new forms of data)
    • Secondary analysis of longitudinal datasets
    • Biosocial research

Funding: The funding limits and requirements for the matching funding have also changed:

  • For applicants who have not yet submitted their PhD or those who submitted their PhD less than two years prior to the call closing date of 20 January 2015, the overall amount that can be applied for is £350,000. The ESRC will fund up to 80% of the grant holder’s time for such applicants, the remainder of the grant holder’s normal salary must be supported through matched funding.
  • For applicants who submitted their PhD more than two years prior to the call closing date, the overall amount that can be applied for is £280,000. The ESRC will fund to up to 40% of the grant holder’s time for such applicants, the remainder of the grant holder’s normal salary must be supported through matched funding.

The Isaac Newton Trust offers matching funds for successful candidates up to a cap of £18,500 per year for three years (it does not support overheads). If the funds are insufficient to cover the entire request for matching funds, then the department may need to cover the difference between £18,500 and the required level of matching funds for the particular candidate.

Restricted call: The number of applications per institution is not limited, but ESRC requires that the institution reviews the applications and ensures they all have a potential of a future 4* in REF terms. An internal selection process will be set up for this call according to University’s Restricted Calls policy: http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/rso/restricted/ .

Internal Selection: The application for internal selection should include: the attached Internal Selection Form, Matching Funds Form and a support letter from the Head of Department. The letter should outline why the Department is recommending the candidate to the Restricted Bids Committee, what his / her particular strengths are, and any proposed non-financial departmental support (e.g. provision of a programme of research skills training). Please note that these letters are very important in the selection process so maximum care should be taken when they are drafted. Please send the applications to researchstrategy@admin.cam.ac.uk by 17th October 2014.

Internal selection deadline: 17th October 2014 5 pm

Sponsor deadline: 20th January 2015 4 pm

Best wishes,
