Restricted Call - ESRC: Transformative Research Call 2014/15

Restricted Call - ESRC: Transformative Research Call 2014/15

Internal EoI deadline: 05 November 2014 (17:00).

The aim of this call is to provide a stimulus for genuinely transformative research ideas at the frontiers of the social sciences, enabling research which challenges current thinking to be supported and developed.

The ESRC regards transformative research as involving pioneering theoretical and methodological innovation, the novel application of theory and methods in new contexts, and/or research based on the engagement of unusual disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives. The expectation is that the transformative research call will encourage novel developments of social science enquiry, and support research activity that entails an element of risk. This call therefore specifically encourages applicants to design a research question that is both highly ambitious and creative.

The Transformative idea needs to address one or more of the ESRC’s three priority areas:

  • Economic performance and sustainable growth
  • Influencing behaviour and informing interventions
  • A vibrant and fair society

Eligibility: Normal ESRC eligibility requirements apply. However, although re-submission of unsuccessful proposals from previous rounds are not permitted, applications that have previously been unsuccessful in other ESRC competitions can be resubmitted under this call. Proposals that are unsuccessful in this call can also be submitted to other schemes with the same idea.

Proposals must be at least 50 per cent social science in disciplinary focus. Applications are particularly welcomed from eligible early career researchers.

Funding: Up to £250,000 (at 100% fEC) for 18 months. The ESRC expects to support up to 20 transformative grants. No project-linked studentships are permitted on proposals for this call.

Please Note: The proposal must be headed by one principal investigator (PI). The PI must be available to attend a ‘Pitch to Peers’ workshop on 17-18 June 2015 if their proposal is shortlisted.

Restricted Call: The University may only submit two applications for this call and the ESRC requires that these be pre-selected. The call will therefore be run according to the University’s Restricted Calls process:

Expression of Interest: If you are interested in leading an application please submit an Expression of Interest stating your name, department, and a short (one paragraph) summary to by 05 November 2014 (17:00).

Internal Selection: If more than two EoIs are received, applicants will be invited to submit an Internal Selection Form (see attached), demographic data form, and letter of support from their Head of Department or Departmental administrator, copied to their School Office, by 19 November 2014 (17:00) for the Internal Selection.

Funder deadline: 19 February 2015 (16:00)
