Restricted Call: 1907 Trailblazer Award (internal deadline: 20 May 2021)

The annual 1907 Trailblazer Award is granted to promising early career MDs and PhDs. Each Fellow is provided US$120,000 to investigate the causes and cures of mental illness.

The award aims to support innovative ideas with high impact potential, that may be too novel or risky to fund elsewhere. 1907 Research strive to fund pioneers and break new grounds in our understanding of mental illness through brain and mind research.

Eligible disciplines include but are not limited to neuroscience, neurology, psychology, psychiatry, cognitive neuroscience, clinical psychology, computational neuroscience, neuroimaging, genetics and engineering (including novel technologies and devices). 1907 Research also strongly encourage applicants with specialization outside of psychiatry (e.g. endocrinology, genetics, radiology, etc.) and outside of medicine (e.g. psychology, neuroscience, engineering, informatics, physics, maths, etc.) to apply.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Applicants must be within ten years of the date PhD/MD degree award (extensions are allowed – please see scheme notes for more details).
  • Applicants must currently be employed by the University, with full-time employment guaranteed for the duration of the project.

  • Applicants should be able to present a strong track record of scientific publications relevant to their research programme.
  • Research applications may be related to but cannot be identical to any other currently funded projects.

  • US$100,000 research grant on an unrestricted basis
  • US$20,000 cash prize to enhance the economic security of the scientist (payable at 50% after year one, and 50% after year two)
