Restricted Call: 1907 Trailblazer Award (internal deadline: 20 May 2021)


The annual 1907 Trailblazer Award is granted to promising early career MDs and PhDs. Each Fellow is provided US$120,000 to investigate the causes and cures of mental illness.


The award aims to support innovative ideas with high impact potential, that may be too novel or risky to fund elsewhere. 1907 Research strive to fund pioneers and break new grounds in our understanding of mental illness through brain and mind research.


Eligible disciplines include but are not limited to neuroscience, neurology, psychology, psychiatry, cognitive neuroscience, clinical psychology, computational neuroscience, neuroimaging, genetics and engineering (including novel technologies and devices). 1907 Research also strongly encourage applicants with specialization outside of psychiatry (e.g. endocrinology, genetics, radiology, etc.) and outside of medicine (e.g. psychology, neuroscience, engineering, informatics, physics, maths, etc.) to apply.


Eligibility requirements:

  • Applicants must be within ten years of the date PhD/MD degree award (extensions are allowed – please see scheme notes for more details).
  • Applicants must currently be employed by the University, with full-time employment guaranteed for the duration of the project.
  • Applicants will have demonstrated independence from senior colleagues. Applicants should be able to initiate and direct their own research as principal investigator, have full responsibility for running their labs and full control of their research labs.
  • Applicants should be able to present a strong track record of scientific publications relevant to their research programme.
  • Research applications may be related to but cannot be identical to any other currently funded projects.


The award of US$120,000 is to be spent over a two-year duration and comprises of:

  • US$100,000 research grant on an unrestricted basis
  • US$20,000 cash prize to enhance the economic security of the scientist (payable at 50% after year one, and 50% after year two)
  • Travel & expense coverage for attendance at two annual meetings


University Internal selection:

The University can submit only two applications per round. Therefore, this call will be managed according to the University's restricted calls procedure.


To take part in the internal selection panel, please submit the following documents to by 20 May 2021:

  • The attached internal selection form.
  • A support letter from the Head of the Department / Centre / Institute that will hold the grant, attesting to the applicant's suitability for the Award, and confirming their support for the project (including any additional or in-kind commitment of resources, including but not limited to relief from teaching/admin duties).
  • One-page list of publications proving the candidate's strong track record of scientific publications relevant to their research programme.


Funder deadlines:

  • Registration of selected applicants by the University: 15 June 2021
  • Submission of selected proposals to the funder: 30 June 2021
