Isaac Newton Trust / Wellcome Trust ISSF / University of Cambridge Joint Research Grants Scheme

The deadline for this scheme is Friday 28th November (midday).

The Isaac Newton Trust, the School of the Biological Sciences and the School of Clinical Medicine have created a joint research grants scheme aimed at recently appointed lecturers in the two biomedical Schools. The objective of the scheme is to provide small research grants to new lecturers to develop projects leading to a full application for external funding (e.g. project grant from a research council or equivalent).

Eligibility: The scheme is open to the University Lecturers in the School of Biological Sciences and the School of Clinical Medicine, or persons appointed to the equivalent posts (approved by their Head of the School). The applicants should have been appointed between 1st October 2012 and 31st January 2015. Applications from previous awardees are ineligible. Previously unsuccessful applicants may submit an application so long as the proposal is either re-written or entirely new.

Budget available: Research grants of up to £80,000 are available under this scheme, for a period of up to 2 years.

Eligible expenditure: Directly incurred and allocated costs only. The grants can be used to fund PDRA support (up to the salary point 45), equipment and ancillary consumables. PI Time, student fees and travel are not eligible costs on these grants. Please note that your department is expected to provide 1/3 of the project cost.

The application should include:

§  Proposal, maximum length 2 sides A4, Times New Roman 12 font, to include the budget requested. The budget should include a breakdown of budgetary requirements.

§  Statement how the proposed project aligns with the University's strategy for basic biological and biomedical sciences within the remit of the Wellcome Trust (downloadable through this link). Maximum length 1/2 page A4.

§  2 page CV

§  Information about funding the applicant received so far, to include: the starting packages received when appointed to the lectureship and grant funding to date, including any grants from the Isaac Newton Trust. Please explain how this proposal is related to your current funding and how it would lead to future large-grant funding. Maximum length 1 page A4.

§  Where applicable, a statement in relation to ethical reviews, outlining what permissions the applicant had and what they would need.

§  Statement of support from the Head of the Department. It should include: confirmation that the department is happy to host the project; statement why they recommend this project for funding and that the department will provide 1/3 of the project cost.

§  pFACT / X5 is not requested at the application stage, but it will be needed at the award stage. Please liaise with your Departmental Administrator to make sure the project costs are correctly calculated.
