Internal funding opportunity: GCRF QR 2020-21

 

 

Applications are invited to the University’s GCRF QR internal funding call for the academic year 2020-21 for activities running from 1st August 2020 (Round 5) until 31st July 2021. Please note that funding is pending Research England confirming the GCRF QR 20/21 allocation.

 

A wide range of initiatives compliant with the UKRI Official Development Assistance (ODA) guidelines to promote the economic development and welfare of ODA eligible countries will be supported.

 

Please note that all activities and funds will need to be spent by the end on 31st July 2021.

 

Application Process

GCRF QR funds are available to support pump-priming, networking and emergency response activities.

 

The University will make this funding available through 3 different schemes:

 

·         Scheme 1: Pump-Priming Fund: to support mono-disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaborative research activities that address problems of developing countries and aims to develop sustainable and innovative solutions. The funded projects will include activities that generate impact from: research that promotes economic development and welfare in ODA countries; pump-priming activities that will inform more substantive research into and impact on developing countries and potentially leads to large applications for funding from GCRF and other sources; where relevant, meeting the full economic cost of eligible research funded by other delivery partners etc.

Applications may be made for grants of up to £80,000 per academic year (other amounts would be considered, if properly justified and funding available).

Application deadlines are 15th May 2020 (Round 5).

Applications should be submitted to GCRFTeam@admin.cam.ac.uk.

 

·         Scheme 2: Travel and Networking Fund: to support building partnerships with research and delivery partners in developing countries, as well as facilitating coordination with GCRF project partners  in the UK, multinational, public and philanthropic research institutions and  Funds will allow researchers to organise networking meetings, and other events to develop partnerships and co-create research programmes with partners, as well as travel out from Cambridge and visit Cambridge to develop collaborative projects in development related research.

Applications may be made for grants of up to £15,000 per academic year (other amounts would be considered, if properly justified and funding available).

Application deadlines are 15th May 2020 (Round 5).

Applications should be submitted to GCRFTeam@admin.cam.ac.uk.

 

·         Scheme 3: Response Fund: to allow rapid response to emergencies, this fund will be used to provide funding for urgent research needs, to respond to emergencies in developing countries, such as disease outbreaks (e.g. ZIKA outbreak, COVID-19), natural disasters such as floods and earthquakes or refugee migrations due to armed conflicts and violence.

Applications may be made for grants of up to £30,000 (other amounts would be considered, if properly justified and funding available).

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Applications should include:

·         An application form 

·         A (short) letter of support from the Head of the Department confirming their support and agreement to hold the grant, if awarded

 

Criteria for the evaluation and ranking of proposals:

 

·         Importance of the impact and benefit to the ODA eligible country

·         Strength of the proposal in terms of enabling genuine links and partnerships in ODA eligible countries.

·         Projects that cannot be funded from other sources or grants elsewhere.

·         Early-stage group leaders and applicants wanting to start doing ODA research.

·         Continuation projects where the review panel deems appropriate.

 

Applications will be reviewed by an internal review panel and we expect applicants will be informed of the outcome in early July.

 

Expenditure:

All funds need to be spent by the 31st July 2021.

 

Reporting requirements:

Successful applicants will be required to submit a detailed final report in line with Research England’s requirements by the end of the project. The GCRF Team will provide guidelines as information becomes available.
