DepartmentsDepartment of Clinical Neurosciences InstitutesMitochondrial Biology Unit, MRC and Cambridge Centre for Brain Repair Research ThemesInterestsI am an academic neuro-ophthalmologist with a major research interest in mitochondrial eye diseases. My research programme is currently focused on dissecting the molecular genetic basis and the disease mechanisms leading to progressive retinal ganglion cell loss in mitochondrial optic neuropathies. With funding from the NIHR and the MRC as part of a Clinician Scientist Fellowship, I have built a national referral network for the investigation and management of patients with mitochondrial eye diseases. We are capitalising on this unique resource to explore disease biomarkers and the clinical applicability of high-resolution structural and functional ocular imaging. We are currently entering an exciting translational phase for mitochondrial eye diseases. I am actively collaborating with an international network of academic and industrial partners in an effort to fast track the development of effective therapies for this group of patients, in particular novel gene therapy approaches.
