DEFRA/ BBSRC funded project to identify the genetic causes of sow aggression towards their offspring. We propose that this is a good animal model for puerperal psychosis.Transcriptional differences in the hypothalamus between aggressive and non-aggressive sows were measured using expression cDNA microarrays. Confirmation of array results was carried out using QRT-PCR. The microarray analysis was complemented with a quantitative trait loci (QTL) approach using microsatellite markers to scan the porcine genome. An affected sib pair analysis was carried out to determine which markers segregated with the affected phenotype. Further genotyping studies were carried out using the Illumina Porcine SNP array. Haplotypes were identified and were found to be syntenic to human puerperal psychosis and bipolar candidate regions. Current analysis includes deep sequencing of haplotype regions and parent of origin studies for epigenetic changes.

Overall summary of gene networks implicated in porcine maternal infanticide from both microarray and QTL studies (green indicates genes implicated from array results and red, pink, white and grey indicates genes from porcine chromosome QTL regions reported in Quilter et al 2007).
