These conditions have a similar presentation and many overlapping features, which often implicates diagnosis and treatment. I am looking at how these conditions impact the brain and behaviour so that we can better distinguish them. I am currently looking at contrasting cortical and subcortical contributions to the specific symptomology in AD and behavioural variant FTD that show no overlap. Both these diseases can present with dysexecutive and amnestic profiles. Previously, the focus has been on temporal and frontal lobe dysfunction in distinguishing the two pathologies, based on memory deficits and executive deficits respectively. However, perhaps there are other brain regions that might have a higher specificity to dissociate the two, such as the medial-parietal area in AD and the subcortical striatum in bvFTD. Research Focus
