Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience


All my research centres around inositides, which fall into two groups, inositol lipids and inositol phosphates. Most of our work focuses on some of the kinases that phosphorylate inositides, and the functions of their substrates and products, including exploration of possible effectors. As with any family of proteins associated with cell signalling, the kinases and effectors are more highly expressed in the brain than any other organ. Moroever, some enzymes that we work with, for example, IP3 3-kinase A and PI4P 5-kinase I gamma 93, are only expressed in neurons in the brain. Thus our reserach is partly generic, using brain as a 'super-signalling' organ to study univeral functions; and part specific, exploring inositide functions that are unique to neuroscience.
