Research Themes
Interests
My research is directed at the broad interface between psychological disorders and cognitive neuroscience, with a particular focus on the brain mechanisms underlying gambling decisions. Gambling is a popular recreational activity that can also become excessive in some people. Indeed, problem gambling shares a number of characteristics with substance use disorders, and may be usefully considered a 'behavioural addiction'. Using a combination of behavioural testing, psychophysiology and functional MRI, my lab has been studying how various features of gambling games (e.g. near-miss outcomes) influence choice and outcome processing during gambling. We work with the National Problem Gambling Clinic in London to study these effects in problem gamblers. In other convergent research, we also study the effects of brain injury on decision-making, and the effects of various pharmacological agents on these processes.
