Dr Dennis Chan
University Lecturer and Honorary Consultant
Dr Dennis Chan is pleased to consider applications from prospective PhD students.
I am interested in identifying alterations in the function of the entorhinal cortex (EC) and hippocampus in early Alzheimer's disease (AD), with the ultimate aim of diagnosing AD prior to symptom onset.
EC grid cell and hippocampal place cell function and their behavioural correlates will be studied in collaboration with Nobel Laureate Professor John O’Keefe at UCL.
Behavioural studies of patients will build on our prior work showing that testing of spatial memory is highly sensitive for pre-dementia AD. These studies will include the development of novel tasks for testing the same behaviours across preclinical and clinical settings.
Imaging correlates of behavioural data will be obtained by analysis of hippocampal structure and connectivity obtained from high resolution MRI.
My research is closely aligned to clinical practice and at Addenbrooke’s Hospital I run a subspecialist Mild Cognitive Impairment Clinic in addition to my involvement in the Neurology-Psychiatry Memory Clinic.
Cross-sectional and cohort studies
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
